About the Panihati area

Right at the banks of the river Ganges is Panihati - a locality steeped with illustrious history of more than five hundred years. A confluence of different religious and linguistic groups has created Panihati into a multicultural potpourri. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Panihati became focal point for academic activities in and around the then Calcutta. The Founder of Asiatic Society, Bharatbhandhu William Jones came here to learn Sanskrit. Over the years eminent personalities like Kabiguru Rabindranath Thakur, Sri Srimad Ramakrishna Paramhansadev, Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy, Litterateur Rajshekhar Basu, Sukumar Roy had come to this place and enriched it. Since the advent of 20th Century, Panihati had become and important geographical destination for its industrial belt, textile hub, academic institutions, with distinct footprint in the economy, polity, and culture of the country.JIS Group has separate campuses of 4 educational institutions (Guru Nanak Institute of Dental Science & Research, Guru Nanak Institute of Technology, Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science & Technology and Guru Nanak Institute of Hotel Management) within an integrated educational hub.
